HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

Beginning in the year 2011, the Indonesian government, due to protecting its domestic market especially food and daily used products, such as toothpaste, soap, etc., from the invasion of the non-halal global products, as the biggest Muslim country in the world (about 220 million Muslim population), start to enforcing the Indonesian halal certification for all imported products before their entering the market. The official halal Indonesia certification is formally issued by the formal organization representing the government called the “Majelis Ulama Indonesia – MUI” (Ulama Committee of Indonesia) supported by the Ministry of Commerce. Now the regulation of the halal certification has been socialized and accepted by all the South East Asian (ASEAN) countries, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Now China is the biggest exporter country of foods and products in Indonesia. Millions of Chinese herbal medicines, tea, biscuits, candles, drinkable products, toothpaste, soap, etc. are flooding in the Indonesian market every day. By the year 2011, all the products must be certified “halal” before they are allowed to enter the Indonesia market.

Speaking about the halal formulation and specification, our study shows that the China Muslim organizations have a more strict procedure and more specification on the perception and the definition of the halal than Indonesian. When the cooperation occurs, culturally it can tighten the relationships of Muslim societies and organizations in China and Indonesia, as well as enable to simplify the process for the non-Muslim china companies which will export their products to Indonesia because their company and products can be certified in Beijing, China instead of in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The cooperation including:

  • Consultancy for the halal food/products for non-Muslim and Muslim companies in China which will export to Indonesia.
  • Regular inspection and maintenance on the halal certification for those companies, and issuing a formal Indonesian certification on halal.
  • Travel & Tourism for Muslim China to Indonesia and Indonesia to China.
  • Exhibition of Halal foods & products for China and Indonesia

NAHDLATUL ULAMA (NU) PROFILE

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia. It was established on January 31, 1926, (Rajab 16, 1344 of Islamic Calendar) in Surabaya. This Organization was legalized on February 06, 1930 as registered in Beskuit Rechtsperson No. IX year 1930, then renewed by the Decree of Minister for Justice of Republic of Indonesia No. C2-7028.HT.01.05.TH.89. in 1989.

The born of NU were derived mainly from a long struggle of a number of ulemas who run Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia “The ulemas” organized a concerted effort and endeavored to conserve and preserve Islamic religious culture, in addition, to maintain and promote the spirit of nationalism in response to the excessive pressure of the prevailing colonial power.
